Not all are. Tax exemption for churches and clergy is supposed to help relieve the financial burden on certain classes of people. For instance-most churches are poor, and most pastors are highly educated people who work for less that minimum wage and do tremendous community service for nothing. Unfortunately many supposed Christians take advantage of this. Crooks make us all look bad.

IF, what you say is true, about churches not paying taxes,
then it is possibly because all money churches receive are supposedly contributions.............contributions cannot be taxed.
Just as in the fact that I am a private pilot..I cannot legally ask passengers for donations for some cause, but any passenger can make a contributions toward some cause, and I can pocket the money. I need not report it.

All non-profit groups are exempt from paying taxes. Churches are non-profit, thus the tax exempt status. I do not see you asking why are abortion clinics exempt from paying taxes?

The simple answer is that there is a separation of church and state.
If churches paid taxes, they'd have a say in the affairs of government. They could endorse candidates, and policies. From there, the US would enter a slippery slope that would lead to civil unrest and violence. (See European history for details of religious discrimination.)
Secondly, if church and state are merged, then the government would begin to dictate what is right and wrong for churches to preach. We don't want that if we want religious freedom in America.
(It would become a tyrrany of the majority against the minority belief systems. There'd be a massive fight over which brand of Christianity, and which interpretation is correct. In other words, there'd be blood in the streets about religion.)
Third as religion and state merge, eventually religious doctrine becomes law. Anything that contradicts religious doctrine would become illegal. Anything could be interpreted as illegal by those who dictated and mandated religious orthodoxy in the US. (Think, Pat Robertson telling you what is appropriate.)
If you wish to see what a state looks like that is run by religion, see what the Taliban did in Afghanistan, and see what life is like in countries like Iran and Saudi Arabia.
Lots of Americans who call themselves Christians have never actually sat down and read the Bible. There's a lot of nasty and violent stuff in that book. We'd live in a harsh society if we lived by a strict Biblical interpretation. (Slavery would be legal, beating wives would be legal, killing children would be legal, plus much, much more.)
So, long answer short... Churches don't pay taxes because it's best to keep the government and religion separate.
We have a enough to fight over in America. Let's not add religion to the mix.
Hope that answers your question.

because to the government churches are a way of keeping people in line because MOST people that go to church either dont cause trouble or they are trying to stop causeing trouble and the government offers a incentive to keep the churches open because also alot of people that go to church are in financial trouble and cant afford to fund the church and seeing how as they are a non profit organization they get help

Not only that, why can they donate thousands of dollars as a tax credit to send missionaries on missions? Why can't I get a tax credit to send my three sons to University? Do we value missionaries more than education?
