The vets say 1 for each cat, but four boxes seems like a lot. I would put one for each floor of your house and at least have 2 or 3. Clean them daily and add/subrtact if needed. I had one box for two cats and my famale let me know by pooping on the floor outside the box. Cats are not shy about their feelings, they will let you know!

Experts say that you should have one litter box for each cat, believe it or not. In my view I don't think it is practical. I would have 2 litter boxes, as cats, by nature, do not like to share.

Keep the litter boxes clean. Don't let waste build up. It only takes a few seconds to scoop two litter boxes out. I would do this in the morning and night. Even though cats can be a home pet, they are still genetically hunters at heart. The reason that a cat covers its waste is a genetic trait that relates to the cat "covering its tracks so that a predator cannot find its home territory."

Note: If you keep the litter clean and one of your cats begins to eliminate on the floor or any other location that is not in or immediately close to the litter box, consult a veterinarian.

See the following, which is a snip from a web site. The source link for the entire article can be found below.

"If your cat begins to eliminate in areas other than the litter box, your first call should always be to your veterinarian. Many medical conditions can cause a change in a cat's litter box habits. If your veterinarian determines that your cat is healthy, the cause may be a simple behavior problem that can be resolved by using behavior modification techniques. Punishment is not the answer, nor is banishing your cat outdoors."

I have also read that you should have 1 for each cat and then an extra. But I live in an apartment and my 4 cats get along with 4 boxes. One of the boxes is Littermaid Ultra and the other 3 are Booda Domes.

I myself have four cats two litter boxes.I actually am using a 58 quart tote with a lid that I cut a huge hole in the lid so the cats jump into this top loading kind of cat box. Reason for this type was actually made to keep my dog from eating the poop. Now she can't even get to it. Less litter every where and more privacy for the cats.

You need at least 2 that you will keep clean on a daily basis (scoopable clumping litter works best to keep them clean). If you cannot commit to cleaning it that often, you should get 3 litterboxes. I have 1 litter box for 3 cats but I clean it twice daily believe it or not. I find it easier than adding another box. I guess I'd rather clean less boxes more often than more boxes less often. It's a smell/space thing for me. ;-)

2 cat litters should be enough. Two cats can share one box. I have 5 cats and 3 litters. Everyone is happy.

some people would say 4 or 5, but I would probably say 2-3. make sure there is at least one on every level of your house. I have two 11 month old kittens and we have one litter box. it's a big one. that is fine for them, they don't mind sharing.

its normally recommended to have 1+ the number of cats you have at home. As they may establish their own zones. however if the cats interact well, you can reduce the number later on. trade off would be how many times you have to clean the boxes.
