Well to be honest, I didn't want cats at all, but I live my fiancee, and she's a cat lover. Which means I have cats.
I think it's a combination of a few factors:
-They're furry and, truthfully, that's nice.
-They look at you with big iridescent eyes which I feel hypnotize the weak willed.
-They do they kneading thing on your lap when they're tired which screws with your paternal or maternal hormones and makes you feel like they need you for something.

and most of all:
-They Purrrrrrrrrr.......... Which causes the human brain to shut down rational thought. Rational thoughts like, "Why does this animal only come near me when I have food?" or, "Why would I want an animal that sets its butt on the surfaces I eat off of?"

Cats are, indeed, pretty lousy pets but, God help me, now that I have them I don't want to get rid of them.

And as any cat owner will agree, Cat's understand every command we give them. They just ignore them.

My cats do NOT get on the counters or tables or even the chairs or couch. They prefer my bed. They were trained early on that it was the happening place in the household. They play all the time in my room, because that's where their toys have always been and that's where we have always played together. They couldn't care less about the rest of the place, and sleep all day while I'm gone. I too, would know if a single speck of dust was out of place when I got home. They are also very clean animals. They DO wash themselves thoroughly and constantly. But, I'm with the others... Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew!!!!! I clean my counter tops before and after preparing meals. Lord knows what insect (such as the common garbage-sucking housefly) was crawling across them while I was away or out of the room!!

What?? I really dont understand what you are saying since I dont put food on my counter or table unless it is on a plate. I dont know anyone who does for that matter I mean who eats off thier counter or puts food directly on it?? I usually use a cutting board or whatever. I have 4 cats and they are allowed on my table and counter I have had people say that it is dirty but they are the ones who get sick all the time since they never expose themselves to bacteria etc... I think you are paranoid and are one of those people obsessed with antibacterial this and bleach that you will probably get really sick if you dont start exposing yourself to germs so that your body can build up natural immunity. Besides I wash my table and countertop every day and even with my cats walking on it it is still cleaner than say the handle of a shopping cart (which in a recent study was found to have the most disgusting germs and bacteria on them) and on top of that I havent met a single person who keeps themselves as clean as my cats do I mean who washes thier entire body 4-6 times a day like a cat does??? It is a proven fact that people have more germs on thier face then thier toilet seat generally does...lol So I ask who wouldnt want a cat on thier table when they are generally cleaner than the average hands of a person???

Well I have 10 cats and we spray them whenever they get on the table. So now if we say their name they get off, I realize that we don't know what they are doing while we are gone, most are outside, we built a huge cat pin, but anyway there are ways to train your cat to not get on tables. Or you can live with it and clean your tables with lysol, unless your too lazy to do that. Personally, why would anyone want a dog that gets in their trash, licks them in the mouth, barks non-stop, and won't ever leave them alone. I have no problem with dogs I just prefer cats over dogs. Well I don't really know if I answered your question, I guess you would just need more answers, kinda like a survey thing,
but good luck on whatever your trying to figure out.

Why would anyone want to be around you? I prefer the cat. My cat is trained, you most likely aren't.

My kitchen like many others here is cleaned before I prepare food and after.

I have three dogs too, they don't get on surfaces but we clean the house after them too... its very nasty to live in any sort of house with filth.

With training cats will know where to be or not. Besides, don't you wash your counters with antibacterial soap/bleach before you prepare food on the counters? Ewww, who's the dirty animal here?

Really-do you place/prepare food directly on your counters? I have 5 cats and feel a little extra cleaning is more than worth the affection they give.
For JinxMesmer-why does your fiancee keep you?

My cats have been trained NOT to get onto the counters or tables. And I KNOW they don't get up there when I'm gone. (Hint, cats would leave footprints and/or hair behind.) It's all about the training you do while they're young....just like HUMANS. ;)

My cats don't go on the counter, or the tables. They know better not too. They would rather the couches anyway...

Considering where most men want to stick their faces, where the cat walks shouldn't bother you
