Protein bars and shhakes should be taken as DIETARY SUPPLIMENTS.

Your diet should be balanced Protein, Carbs and fat.
More protein if you work out, so you can build muscle.

If you work out 3 times per week only , have a protein shake before or after the workout, the extra amino acids will keep your muscles from getting too sore.

If you eat junk or empty calories and feel really tired during workouts and need more protein or calories in your diet,
then have a bar before or during the workout.

Otherwise, you are just taking in a lot of calories that your body will turn into fat if you are not using them.

Hope this helps

I'm not the expert, but I usually have 1 whey protein powder drink in skim milk per day and work out 6 days a week. The rest of the protein I get from food. If you're bodybuilding, you might need more. I don't think it matters much whether you take in the protein before or after, but I drink mine after the workout.
