I've been learning for a year or so and have never found any worthwhile online service. The best way I have found is to make my own flashcards based on the most commonly used characters (there are lists online) along with a text book (say Chinese for Everyone) and a dictionary (the Oxford Starter Chinese Dictionary). I carry these flashcards around with me and find that I can learn about 20 characters a day in spare time that would otherwise be fruitless (walking to work etc.)

Go to http://www.mandarintools.com/
There's a section called Tools for learning Chinese - lots of different subsections. It helped me a lot.
If you're studying traditional characters and want to learn some conversational Chinese as well, contact me (by clicking on my avatar) and I can give you another website that's great.
Good luck!
