It seems that whenever anyone is remotely not praising the Americans the majority of american answers accuse the questioner of hating America. Is this just a massive inferiority complex or just a few misguided souls getting america as a whole a bad name.

We can sometimes be spoiled brats. Rightly or wrongly most of us grow up thinking we live in the greatest country in the world, not because of who we are as individuals but because of our institutions and our history. We naively expect the entire world to feel the same way and for everyone to "love" us. I suppose it is kind of an insecurity, possibly because we are this melting pot. I think most countries with single strong ethnic identities probably don't suffer from this insecurity. They are who they are and they just don't care what anyone thinks. Americans get this attitude but in a different reactionary way. Trying to give an example: The French say might criticize America for something it's doing in the world...and it feels no embarrassment about doing so...they are perfectly justified in doing so. However after this "affront" we become insulted...kind of get our "feelings hurt"....then respond with a kind of beligerant screw you attitude. I suppose we come off kind of whiney at times like that. On the other hand it seems that other countries aren't quite as "thin skinned". So I don't think it's an inferiority complex...but I think it's a bit of over concern with image. I think we should just do what we do and quit worrying about what people think. Personally though I have to admit that i'm becoming weary of the weight of all the worlds problems and if the world wants us out of them maybe we should just get out of them...and let them deal with it all. Seems to me like we are only having our entire economy destroyed by dealing with the rest of the world anyway..so shut the borders...bring all the troops home, cut off all foreign aid, no more trade, sit back, and carry a big big stick. Maybe then the rest of the world will find us acceptable.

truthseeker...you are seeking anything but the truth or if you are it's to seek it out and destroy it wherever you find it.

Perhaps the morale in America is low these days. There is much international uproar towards America, and I think that the ill responses are just the manifest of people trying to stay wary of this sentiment. As well, America has shifted dramatically to the right, and I'm sure you know what that means. I'm somewhat of a rightist myself, but I'm open to all arguments so that I can demonstrate that I consider all things before concluding.

I'm American, and I am sorry that you have formed this opinion of me or other Americans. No one, (I am assuming in any country) likes to feel confronted or attacked; and some of these questions can get very confrontational.
I heard a quote that really changed the way I consider other peoples attitudes. I don't remember who wrote it.
"We like to be judged by our best intentions; however we are judged by our last worst action."

I would also like to remind you that this is an anonymous worldwide message board. You have absolutely no way of knowing that the defensive posts that you are reading actually came from Americans.

As an American, many of my fellow citizens think the world is America's playground and exists to serve American needs. Just look at the ignorance of basic geography, this should speak volumes. It is pathetic and sick I know but please remember, we are not all like this but a lot of Americans are.

"hating America" is just the bs that is used to invalidate any and all criticism of American policy. Most people who criticize don't
hate...thats just what the repugnicons thought up as the way to spin things.

um, perhaps America needs to be hated a little. Killing people you disagree with so you can take their oil doesn't seem to be a strategy that would endear one's self to neighbors and acquaintances. Threatening other people not to defend themselves in case you decide you want to take their oil is not going to inspire feelings of love and happiness. In short, if you do not want anyone hating America, work to make it more lovable.
