I just got a 3 month old toy poodle 4 days ago. She won't eat when I'm not in sight. Even if she hasn't eaten in a while. She whines when I leave her and her food/water dish alone. When I bring her the food, she will take a bite and then as soon as I leave, she stops eating and whines, yelps and barks telling me to come back. Even if I do come back, and stay close to her, she doesn't eat. She just whines. She only eats when I hand feed her. I can't sit with her every mealtime and hand feed her! I read in books that humans needs to leave their dogs be whlie they're eating, but it seems that this dog is an exception. What do I do? I'm desperate, please!

Say that I give her food and leave her for 15 min, come back, take away any uneaten foods and I find out that she just ate a couple of bites. If I keep taking away foods that she barely ate, wouldn't she starve? She whines when I'm with her, but when there's no food because she didn't have much.

your babying her and she is training you. feed her some raw chicken necks in her crate close and secure the door. in 15 minutes return and take anything not eaten away. continue this until you are comming back in 10 minutes and the dog eats quietly and finishes her meals.

I too have this problem and think you need to be tough on this. My toy poodle is a rescue dog, I got her when she was 4 and have been trying for 18 months now to train her out of this behaviour. The only thing is she doesn´t whine anymore....I guess I could count my blessings. One problem down ...One to go! She still doesn´t eat when I am not home, the rest of my family can be in the house and she will not eat until I get home. Be strong, and consequent!! I wish you luck, it will be hard but worth it!

Sounds like that puppy has you wrapped around its paw. Don't worry so much! If the dog is hungry, it will eat. I would recommend not feeding the dog by hand until it starts eating on its own when your there or away. Believe me, its not going to let itself starve. Also some new puppies won't eat for a few days after leaving their litter.

Good luck!
ps, of course youve taken your new puppy to the vet and made sure its healthy?

I did this when i got my dog she wouldent eat without me next to her .. the best thing you can do is put it down and walk away , she will eventually get hungry enough to eat it by herself . dont baby her because then you just teaching her she should only eat with you there .
