Spiders can't break the surface tension of the water in the drain U-bend, so that's an old wives' tale ;)

They have a right to take a bubble bath just like the rest of us...and most of us do appreciate a clean smelling spider --- before we squish it. (by the way they do crawl up through the tub drain).

Spiders need a moist environment to live in, but they also like a dark area, especially brown recluses that is why they stay in closets. The area is dark & cool. I get lots of water spiders in my bathroom, mostly in the tub but sometimes I see them on the floor & kill them before they have a chance to get in the tub. I don't know the specific spider that you are talking about getting in your bath but with body & legs the water spider averages about the size of a quarter. And they are creepy looking. They are very defensive because they do not make webs. Spiders to crawl around more at night I didn't realize how much until the other night. My husband went to bed before I did so when I went to bed I had to turn my lamp on to take my nightly meds and as soon as I did, I saw 5 or more moving really fast to get back in the dark. Scared the fire out of me, made me wonder how many was crawling around in my daughters room. I don't know how many other answers you have been given but maybe you will get the answer that you are looking for.

because they drop from the ceiling on their web, then cast off to explore, but can't climb the smooth sides of the bath to get out, and they can't throw a web to climb up either. Placing a piece of string around the taps and trailing to the bottom of the bath will help any stranded spiders to climb out!

Most bathtubs are light colored or white giving high contrast to the spiders, which is why your more likely to see them there, the average home has more than a hundred spiders in it. You just don't see them most of the time.

They are looking for a water source because that's where a lot of bugs hang out to get a drink and then they get caught up in their web...like a lion hangs out at the water hole to catch animals there...
