How northern do you mean? I am from Washington state and I never wear shoes unless I am going out of my house. Even then I will wear slip on shoes or sandals, even in the snow. I don't think shoes on all the time is the 'norm'.

I don't particularly like stubbing my toes, or the feeling of dirt on my feet so I wear shoes out of doors. In my home, I wear slippers and in someone else's home I will remove my shoes if it is apparant their floors are not crudy. I simply don't want to injure my feet is the main reason I wear shoes.
