I think yoga is too mellow of an exercise to burn a lot of calories and lose weight. I think you should still do it because it is great for balance and flexibility, but you should do some cardiovascular exercise like running or swimming if your joints aren't that good.
You should also consider weight training, you will lose weight faster and have more strength and energy.

I wouldn't really eat less unless you are eating like a pig. I would just exercise more.

well u may end up losing weight.. but the day u stop doing yoga u will gain it back.. this i s just not with yoga but its with every excercise u do and yoga is no exception.. but u can avoid gaining wait bu having control over your diet and performimg those excercises in yoga which are not too heavy ie to stranious and somethings which can do even in spare time u get while u r at work or busy with other things...

but yes it will help u kepp u fit

Yoga doesn't do much to help you lose weight. Yes, it is a stress reliever and helps you become more flexible, but it doesn't burn many calories.

If you are just starting out, starting wtih yoga is better than not starting at all. But I would definitely progress to more intensive activities if your goal is to lose weight. Remember to watch what you eat, as that is a very important part of losing weight.
