well if she knows that there 100 % no chance of getting back together with him, then she can do what she likes there is no reason for her not to sell it if that what she really wants to do

i would rather keep it since this is part of my past where i got also some lessons after loving somebody and even get to the point wherein the guy gave me an engagement ring.for me, having this kind of ring is kinda flattering although the relationship has ended.perhaps it is not yet your fate to be with each other but who knows time will come all of a sudden you will just going to wake up in the morning and find out that you were indeed destined for each other and if the guy knows that you still keep the ring i know he would really be happy since you've been so grateful to him by keeping the ring that he gave to you

If he doesn't want it back & it holds no sentimental value to your friend (plus it's not really a fashion piece), then the logical step is to sell it. It only seems harsh because it's an engagement ring.
The item was a gift and so she is the owner. As the owner, she is able to act as she wishes in reference to the item - whether it was a ring, a toy or a block of cheese.

If she's worried about regretting selling it, why not take it to a jeweler and have it reset into a necklace or another ring. Besides...diamonds are still beautiful...she may still have a fondness for him...and that's a way to keep it and not be 'hanging on' to the memory of the wedding that will never be.

As long as she offered the ring to him back she did the correct thing. If he did not want it, its hers to do with what she wants, either sell it or have a jeweler melt it down and take the stones out and make something else with them, earrings or something.

If she offered to give the ring back and he didn't want it, then it's hers. So she can do with it what she wants. Either keep it or sell it. It's up to her.

The proper thing to do is to give it back, regardless of what he says. Anyone can come back later and sue for it (within statutes of limitations), or he might get angry and change his mind after she's sold it. She'd have absolutely no legal, let alone moral, recourse. The best thing to do is to ship it to him (insured of course) with a receipt/signature so she has record of it, or better yet, send by courier and get his signature. She shouldn't keep the ring.

Keep it for a while as he may ask for it back at a later date, but if not sell it

In this situation, selling sounds like a decent option. Keeping sounds even more decent, but not when you possibly need the money.
