"Duck and Cover" really did work, you know. It's a little known fact that the Cold War between the US and Russia ended because of the scientific discoveries made because of it.

During the mid 80's, Reagan built a missile defense shield along the entirety of the US border constructed out of grade school desks and hardcover textbooks. This shield was utterly impenetrable, and when the Russians found out about it, they realized they'd lost and gave up. A few months later, the Soviet Union collapsed.

True fact.

We never had that type of drill when I was in school.Although I vaguely remember a time I was almost 3 years old.We were on the front porch and a loud siren began to blast,my older sisters pushed me down and they got down too and told me it was a bomb drill. Is that the same thing?

That reminds me...My father was building us a new house at the time. This was the mid 60's. He built a very fortified bomb shelter right into our house. The cement porch was actually the roof of our cement bomb-proof room in the basement. For a while we kept canned goods and supplies in it. Later he stuffed it so full of junk that I'm sure glad we never needed it. haha

I am supposed to remember all this, but I truly do not. My husband who is the same age as me remembers being 8 in Florida, and doing the under-the-desk drills and films also, but they either did not practice such folly in Oklahoma and Louisiana, or the trauma of just being dragged to school overrode everything.

The loud siren is usually tornado warning. We had duck and cover in elementary school in fla. like it would help you survive the blast. We also had bomb drills where we all would go outside and line up and wait for the blast.
