could start with the canon digital rebal. This is a nice camera and you could find for around 400 - 600 used

olympus 1300 thru 3500 series are good 200 - 500 buck cameras
high optical zoom
small compact and versitile
i use a Cannon Reble GSR 9mega pix digital camera it runs about 900 but is prob one of the best digital cameras that i've ever owned

try canon powershot A420. i just got one recently. the pictures are pretty good. the video is okay too. and the battery life is incredible. and its pretty cheap too. im trying out photography too and this was the cheapest digicam that i could find that i thought was okay.
