I hate it when other people other than my man calls me sweetie, honey, or sweetheart. obviously I don't mind being called sweetgurl. Or sweet.

It totally depends on the person using the term.

I'm an older person so, unfortunately, I sometimes call a young person sweetie. I certainly don't do it to be patronizing. But more like a thank you for being sweet or nice to me. I'm prone to use the term to young sales people. I usually apologize and say something like, "I have a grandson your age - you've been very helpful. thank you."

However, I've heard some older people use the term and I've wanted to swat them so I think it would all depend on the tone of voice and the situation.

Have a great day, sweetie. :O)

I haven't ever really thought about it that way. I have always lived in the south and that's just what we do. We never call anyone by their real name. I have always called people sweetie, darlin', or sweetheart. I guess that we do it because that's what our mommas' always did. It has always more of a endearing connotation than patronizing. Sorry if I ever called you darlin'. I never meant for you to get your panties in a wad!

No, I call people all the time sweetheart, darling, and hun. I am from the south, and we are like a big family. It doesn't mean they think that you are young or something, for most it is the way they were raised. I wouldn't think to much of it any way they are just words, and if you are secure with yourself then it should bother you in the first place.

No, I like it. It makes me feel like I must be a really sweet person!!!

Seriously though, I am pretty secure with who I am, so I don't let people calling me names or terms of endearment bother me.

I am sorry. I call everyone Hun, Sweetie, or Babe only because I am really bad with remembering names. So, If I ever offended you.... sorry.

I don't get annoyed, because I know that for many people who use the term regularly it is mostly habit. Often, they aren't even aware that they are doing it.

When I was in high school I knew an old lady that called everyone sweetypie. It was so annoying.
