I think that's not necessarily true for the English, only when it comes to soccer. Rugby supporters are not violent at all.

All countries have some small percentage of persons who will always cause trouble in the same way as there will always be criminals to some extent regardless of their nationality.
England does not have a monopoly on this or with disorderly conduct at sporting events.
They do often get the blame however even when people from other countries are also involved.
It's usually alcohol & IQ related . Silly persons who can't take their drink but sadly there is an element of bias, hatred & prejudice which can also spark these events. Frequently this starts from an anti-English stance.

They can, what about the rugby world cups, the Olympics the cricket world cups and many other sporting events.
It's just a few dickheads involved with football, they ain't true England football supporters. There are over 70 thousand England supporters in Germany and maybe 100 twats there looking for a fight.
Don't judge the English on these 100 or so tw@ts

Great, judging by the above we can't even produce decent thugs any more (sarcasm)
To be honest I don't think we're any worse than anyone else at the moment, but our media have a definite set agenda for the world cup and getting a report of an English rampage is top.
Remember the first report, 5-10 drunks in a corner of a square of a major city fighting amongst themselves. Come on ,that happens in every town/city in the world on a Saturday night. But you could almost see them drooling over it.
I don't know the details of last nights problems, but I know for sure I'm not trusting the British media for an unbiased report
I've close German family and friends, and believe me, according to the German police the English are of no special concern.
Sh*t, I'm so p*ssed off now, I think I'm gonna drink a litre of your best German larger and kick a chair over! :o)
opps, just reread your question, and it seems general rather than world cup specific.
But I'm still peed off with our media coverage!!!!

The majority of football fans from England and anywhere else just want to have fun and watch a game of football, unfortunately there always seems to be a minority that has to get drunk and act like a bunch of fools!
I don't know what happened last night though, according to yahoo news about 378 England fans were detained but that's only a fraction of the thousands of fans over there who didn't do a thing wrong!

You are so blinded! Yes I agree there are a percentage of football supporters who do behave badly and bring a bad name upon the average British person but it's like me thinking that all Americans eat McDonalds every day (do you get my drift?). I love America and have nothing against American people but I bet there were some American supporters who went to the World Cup that behaved the same way. You have tunnel vision my friend. Come and visit us, we are friendly, polite and have a wicked sense of humour. Not to mention London is the best city in the world!

This is a bit one sided, many countries suffer from having yobbo's amongst them.
All we see in this country is headlines by our press about our fans being rowdy. And yet many fans of different countries have also been rowdy.
I think people just highlight the English fans behaviour because of violent incidents years ago.
Let's face it, there are over 70,000 England fans in germany right now, and less than 200 have been arrested over the last two weeks. So stop tarring all of us with the same brush, you are just a racist and you should be ashamed!

Hear hear!!!!! They cannot help their self's. Whenever they cause trouble in another country they report that it was Brits but when they are being praised for something then they are described as English. They are giving the whole of Britain a bad name with their embarrassing behaviour and should not be allowed to take part in events if they cannot behave.
