the product key thats on the computer is not working when trying to activate windows. how do i get a new one

get code off of sticker and input it when prompted, otherwise if the code has been used more than three times you have to make aphone call to validate license

This Windows that you have is illegal/in genuine. On the eleventh day, you will try to booth the machine but in vain.
It will try booting up but can not go through the process of BIOS TEST. You will be frustrated because then it will be too late to even recover normally the files that you use often and need most.
So this is what you should do. Get a Windows whose product key you have and install it afresh , after REMOVING all the files that you don't wanna loose.

What version? If you're talking about Windows XP and you don't have any Service Packs installed, installing a service pack will give you an extra 30 days. If you have Windows Vista, then you'll have to reinstall.

I just did my second reinstall of Windows. All it took to activate Windows again was a quick call to their center in India where I was given a number to enter. Very easy. Just make sure that you have your original activation number. If not.......... :(

actually, you just got 10 more days till you MUST activate. anyways, just go to start>>all programs>>activate windows (its at the top) OR the next time the little baloon thing pops up from the taskbar, click on it, dont ignore it, and go through the wizard

there should be a product key that came with the desk or there will be a sticker somewhere on your computer if you can't find it your screwed

either call the number seen on the screen or let your program access MS on its own and it will register your product.

you need a legal key, buy one, even if you find a crack, windows won't let you update security updates
