We are raising children who want things when and where they ask for them which is making for a very self-serving, impatient society. Perhaps if we use more discipline and not entertain their every whim future generations might stand a chance!
"Spare the rod, spoil the child"? Maybe that's a little extreme, but it's true that whatever you teach your child now will stay with him throughout his life (and pass down).

Why not? Give your child EVERYTHING he/she asks for because they need it. If they want it, give it to them. Don't hold back, what if they decide to hate you? We can't have that... we have to make sure your child has everything they want. You want a what? A gun to bring to school to shoot up other kids? Sure, don't go to no dealer on the streets... I'll go get you one from Wal*Mart and I'll help you shoot some kids...
Spare the rod, spoil the child.
Let them cry now, or you'll cry later...

Do you mean spoil as in give them anything they ask for, when they ask for it, no matter what it is. Then no. I don't believe that children benefit from never hearing NO.
To spoil your kids while on vacation or at Christmas time or their Birthdays, then that's different.
I do know a few spoilt children who want for nothing and I don't like them as people, but that is their parents fault, they know no better. Start as you mean to go on!

"He who spareth the rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him correcteth him betimes" (Proverbs 13:24) and "Withhold not correction from a child: for if thou strike him with the rod, he shall not die. Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and deliver his soul from hell." (Proverbs 23:13-14) "A wise son loves correction, but the sneseless one heeds no rebuke." (proverbs 13:1)
I think what happened is that someone paraphrased it and it became accepted as the standard.

You can buy them stuff but perhaps you could do it using a reward system. If they are good all day they get a star and when they have 10 stars they get a toy. Otherwise they will expect to get everything in life for no effort.

You can spoil them as long as they know how to share.
