I am a professional pilot. No you can't use them for calls once in flight. You won't receive much of a signal up at altitude anyhow, especially not over the ocean. The FCC is reviewing cell phone use on airlines because there is no evidence that they adversely affect the airplane's systems. Unfortunately there are no current or future plans to repeal this rule at this time.

On 9/11, the phone calls were made while the airplane was flying at a lower altitude.

The reason why it's called a CELL phone is that a cell is an area where a bay station can receive & transmit the radio signal that is used by your hand set. That is, your hand set doesn't send a signal all the way to your destination by itself. It only sends a signal to a bay station that is relatively close to you.

While you are in the air, there is no bay station close enough to you to pick up the radio signal from your handset to make the call.

All you will be doing is sending out radio signals which may or may not interfere with the plane's radio equipment.

No, you can NOT. You can use it before the plane taxis to the runway and after it pulls up to the arrival gate but you MUST have the phone off during the flight! Don't worry, the pilot will tell you when it is ok to use it. Have a safe trip. :)

Well Melissa D. I'm pretty sure they figured since they were going to freaking die anyway they didn't care about the fines and the pushed the magical green button that turns their cell phone on and used them anyway. Did you think hard about that comment first?

unfortunately, its fact. all airlines force you to turn off the cell phones when on the plane. what it does is interfere with the airplane's wireless connection to.. wherever. on some airlines, though, they have phones in the seat that you can use of you have a calling card.

no you can't use a cell phone on a plane, so here is a thought for you "how did the people in the planes that hit the twin towers call their loved ones?"

There are times when you can and times when you can't. You can ask the stewardess. During the flight, you can't, because it will interfere with the pilot's communications system. And you DON'T want to mess around with that...that's a fact!

I flew to Phoneix and they said to turn them off..It interferes with the stuff on the plane.Other then that i don't know if they work that far up in the air.

You can use it during the flight.. but not during take off or landing.
Ask attendants if they have their own inbuilt mobile calling service as well.
