There are many anti-depresants being used today. Prozac and Paxil are by far two of the most commonly used, each having their own drawbacks. It's most important that you follow your doctors instructions on taking these two medicines. If and when the time comes to stop taking them, be very sure to follow your doctors instructions. Both Prozac and Paxil can and will cause side effects that can change your life forever and in some cases, even death can occur if you dont follow your doctors orders, slowly and precisely. As an example, below you will find just a few of the possible side effects that Paxil can cause. Birth defects for the women taking it during the first trimester. Jolting electric "zaps". Dizziness, light-headedness, Vertigo, in-coordination, Gait disturbances, Sweating, Extreme nausea, Vomiting, High fever, Abdominal discomfort, Flu symptoms, Anorexia, Diarrhea, Agitation, Tremulousness, Irritability, Aggression, Sleep disturbance, Nightmares, Tremor, Confusion, Memory and concentration difficulties, Lethargy, Malaise and Weakness. Understand that the medicine was prescribed to help you fight the urges of suicide and to help turn your life around so that you can begin to get back to a normal and better life. Under no circumstances should you attempt to get off of the drug without the help of your doctor. More than anything else, your personal desire to get off of the drugs and to begin making your way back to a more normal life will depend on you. Be strong, knowing that you'll do a great job in making it all work. Be patient, as these drugs can cause severe and permanent damage while attempting to get off of them. Slowly break away from them, reducing the chances of causing yourself not only physical but mental harm. Expect nothing less than a 100% success and then give yourself the credit that you deserve for having taken the drug in the first place. Last of all, listen carefully to your doctors instructions and follow them exactly as he/she prescribes, having ways to keep yourself busy while breaking yourself off of them and if at all possible, by helping someone else that has been taking either of them, not only giving them the confidence they need but yourself as well. The best way to rid yourself of the desire to commit suicide is to help someone else get through it at the same time. You'll be proud of what you've accomplished and will pass that pride along to them. By asking the question in the first place, I immediately knew that you will do an awesome job. I, for one ,am very proud of you for asking. Larry

There are some people with what are called pyrodoxical reactions to a drug, e.g. a drug to treat nausea makes them sick to their stomach, a drug that is supposed to stop pain gives them headaches. Also, a possibility is that as a Depression is lifting, the most fatal part of it is when there is a little bit of energy being returned, particularly if the person had a history of suicide attempts. Any new prescription of this type needs to be monitored for several weeks after it starts.

Prozac (Fluoxetine) is believed to sometimes cause thoughts of suicide in teenagers, but I've been taking Prozac when I was in Junior High, and I couldn't really tell a differnece in the increase of suicidal thoughts. Who knows though: the best thing is to talk to your psychiatrist about it - tell him your concerns and let him know if any noticeable symptoms have appeared.

Prozac is supposed to make you feel happy, or at least not sad. I suppose anything's possible but that's not the usual reaction.
