One thing that makes a really good gift and are relativly inexpensive (or at least cheaper than American prices!) are pearls. There are pearl farms on the outskirts of Shanghai, if he does not have a lot of time in Puxi, Shanghai there is a place called Yu Yuan gardens, just outside of that is a four story building I call the pearl market. They will make anything for you on the spot or in a couple days time depending on your need. Hope this helps! Hope he has a great trip!

CLOTHES!!! Depending on your size and the style you like...it's clothes heaven at discount prices. Shoes are always nice but you can't really know the tastes of others. But pajamas, robes and slippers in silk are to die for here. Also they have some really really nice silk art if he knows where to look...and BARGIN. Tell him not to pay more then 60% of what they ask. The tea is nice if you are into that...I'm not really but I still like the flavor. If you like DVD's then it's also a big thing to get...since one DVD is less then $1. Purses and bags are pretty nice but he should check the quality. I don't know about you but local food is something I always get...as long as you can keep it fresh or it's packaged. They have some some odd but delicious foods that can't be found abroad. China...from china is also nice but hard to travel with. I found some statues from local artists that are beautiful but I don't know how I'll ever take them back with me...without paying a fortune.

It's kind of sad but a lot of the old Chinese things we see in the US can't be found in China!! The young Chinese don't like traditional things at all so it's hard to come by some of the beautiful silk clothes and slippers that we all think of when we think of China. They say it's for old people. So most of the 'really Chinese' things are for tourists and that means you pay tourist prices...which aren't that bad but still. Art is also a good thing to bring back if you like ink scrolls or landscapes. They have some really nice things but he might have to look a little.

If you are interested in brand named things like Gucci, Chanel, etc. Shanghai has great fake markets (Xiangyang Market, or Qipu Lu market) where you can get knock-off bags and sunglasses at for comparatively really cheap if you bargain well.
You can also go to these places and bargain to get good prices on silk things (pillow covers, table runners, etc.) and cultural products like chopsticks and scrolls.
There are also antique markets that sell recreations of old Chinese things. They also sell Mao-ist paraphranalia that can be really funny.
I think it depends what kind of things you like. Shanghai is a really westernized and modern city but you could find just about anything you might want (remember to always bargain down prices). I don't really know about Nanning.

himself of course, and if you've always been looking for a prada or gucci or anything other brand of handbags, wallets, etc., now is the time! of course a lot of its knock-off. but your son has to be careful of getting the best price. if he's not chinese or has anything to do with china other than just a trip there, it's going to be hard to get a deal from people.

also, you could get movies that are just coming out in america, but be warned that most of them are kind of tacky. but i think you should totally get a pair of knock-off chanel sunglasses there if you're a woman. my dad got me a pair for 100 yuan (about US$12.50). you just have to be careful if you bring way too many knock-off stuff to the airport. =]

scroll paintings...i stock up everytime i go b/c they are quite cheap and make great gifts! tea sets can be nice...they had some nice ones in the yuyuan area in shanghai...but you must bargain like crazy as a lot of tourists go there. yuyuan has a lot of fun little trinkets and things to make gifts...maybe he should check there as well. clothing and knockoffs are really cheap too.
