I think it is the way people approach religious subjects that makes folks uncomfortable.

not the religion - it's probably the way you talk about it. people trying to convert others usually sounds like salesmen, and everyone know what happens when a salesmen started giving their improper sales pitch - people stiffen up and become suddenly cold
even just stating how much you love your religion's teachings can be considered forcing your belief on others. if you started by quoting things, judging or disapproving something in front of people, it will definitely turn people off
you said they can't recognize something beautiful? and they are so used to thinking about ugly and unproductive things?
do you know how biased that statement sounds?
maybe you should start blaming others for not listening to you and do some introspection
maybe it's you

Let's see, is it the self-rightousness, or the smug condescension?
Or, maybe it's the way they tie all lifes problems up with little lines like "God doesn't give us more than we can bear".
Or maybe it's the way they love death, "he's off to a better place!".
How about intolerance, and fanaticism, who doesn't like that?
How about how so many of the religious are just so eager to tell you "the good news, Jesus died for you!".
How about the constant pointing out of who's going to burn in hell for this or that?
How about the way a religious person with skill in some particular area actually thinks they are so special that God made them just a little bit better, "it's just a gift".
Does no one else get tired of hearing these things? I do. So yes, sit down next to me on my two hour flight to Chicago and say something about Jesus love. I'll stiffen right up, you bet.

I think it's the world we live in love. I've been spiritual and religious for a long time and am now a Pagan. With a select group, if it doesn't benefit them they are not interested. Also with all the Jihads and other Holy Wars and also bad stuff happening in the world. They want to know why it's happening and how could a benevolent god/ess/spirit do such things.
I don't agree in preaching to others though. Let folks find there own way in there own time.

My dear friend if you think about the definition of religion for a while and look at the religions being propagated and practiced around you, using a little bit of common sense, you'll understand that a religion is basically a system of 'Man-made concocted theory'. Designed to impose upon others without logic system of ones liking. Usually adopted by societies having commonalities between them or a particular brand of society. It is, therefore, that you will bore people if you start a topic of religion specially when they are no part of your faith/make-belief 'Religion'.

Alot of folks feel religion is alot about rules do this don't do that and are caught up in a mess of ritiual's and maybe family traditions thinking that it is all boring anyway. Having a religion is going to do nothing for anybody unless they practice what they preach and most don't practice what they preach . So people do all they can to punch holes into tradition religious practices because they are content with there lifestyle's and don't want rule's tradition's religion
ect.

I think it is because there are so many people out there that only believe that what they think is "true" and if you don't feel the same way they treat you with anger or pity. Neither of which I want or need, thank you very much. I am very happy and secure in my beliefs and believe they are true just as hard as they may believe they are wrong. You only have to run into an overbearing hellfire and brimstone person one time to be turned off for life.

Maybe they are tired of being punished for saying things like the Earth isn't flat and the center of the Universe. Maybe there is just way too much hurt in this world to believe that god loves us. Maybe it is just too phony to praise a god that is supposedly all powerful and created everything but not condemn him for all the evil, pain and suffering. Maybe it is all the millions of unanswered prayers for things like an end to the AIDs epidemic, or the Black Plague, or Smallpox, or Yellow Fever, or starvation, or poverty. Or did Mr. all powerful answer the prayers with - No, I like all those things. Sorry if I messed with your faith, but you asked. That is just a small part of the answer.

Religion is distasteful to people because it means there's a purpose to life....you can no longer just go around doing what ever you want. There are now rules, there are now morals, things you must live by. It takes all the fun out of everything. But that's just laziness....come on now people!!! (not you)

Religion is a taboo subject in today's world, because so many people have strayed from it all together. Most people still believe in a God, but a lot are straying to falsies, like drugs and alcohol. Its an age where most do not want to except responsibility for their actions, even in the afterlife.

I think many condescending judgemental holier than thou attitude of many so called "christians" ruined the expectations of many secular population. It is unfortunate. The arrogance judgemental attitude alienates many secular people, and the funny thing is they don't even know they are just as sinful as people they are judging.
Many of these so called judgemental christians have alienated the people and remind me so much of Pharasees(religious moralists) that Jesus battled all throughout the New Testament. Jesus said "you will say I have performed miracles on your name and did wonderful things on your name, but when the time comes, I will say I have not know you." He also says, "Tax collectors and Prostitute will goto heaven before any one of you (Pharasees)."
