Well it's an instinct, But it's not always true. It all depends on how high the cat is falling from. Like someone said if a cat falls of the couch it's going to land on its back cause it's not going to have enough time to twist around unlike if it was falling from a roof it would have time, but it might have a few broken bones or fractures.

1st cats naturally have great sense of balance which allows them to be very aware of which way is up.
2nd Cats have a very flexible spine and no collar bones so they are able to maneuvre quickly and smoothly.
This combination of knowing where they need to be and having the physical capability to get there makes it more likely that they will succeed in landing on their feet.

acutually thy dont but they do have the ability to twist there bodies in mid air (cats are cool so they seem to land on there feet casue they can twist around ..there smart

Not always, I have one that sometimes falls off the sofa and lands on his side, and then looks at everyone as if he meant to do it.

if cats are allowed to climb trees then they have to be careful when they fall and try as much as possible not to hurt themselves. its just nature's way.
