Because they are uneducated.
Plus many people believe that if you are not on "THEIR SIDE" then you must be on the "DEVIL'S SIDE" because there is no grey areas. So, although Pagans do not worship Satan, they do his work by not being (insert whatever religion they happen to be).
Not my views, just answering the question.

I guess it depends on each individuals insight into the specific distinctions of the two.
Pagan generally only suggests pre-christian. A paganist doesn't necessarily worship mother earth so much as one or any number of deities that have manifestation through the physical characteristics of the earth.
A paganist would for example not worship a rational God who created wind or the functionality of wind, but rather the wind itself or some kind of anthropomorphization of the wind. Or the sun, or the ocean, or the trees, or some animal, or whatever the case may be.
A Satanist would be a person who would worship some kind of personification of ideas that are contrary to what might generally be considered good or morally upright. For instance, the average Christian would say divorce or adultery is wrong because of the pain that it causes other people involved in the situation. Or maybe that fornication is wrong because while you may be finding a momentary physical pleasure, you are denying by such behavior, a deeper demand of intimacy of the soul.
The Satanist stands for the permissive lifestyle. That is the indulgence of the physical impulses without regard to any kind of law or order of the consciousness or the emotions. The paganist might very well accept some of these higher ideals, but have a very physical sort of association with the being of power.
Most major religions appeal to the mind. Whether Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Persian Zoroastrianism, which was quite widespread in its day, they all have the idea of a sort of pure consciousness of power who manifests enlightened ideas through the physical world.
The Satanist gives homage to a consciousness that opposes those perceived enlightened ideals, and the paganist doesn't entertain that kind of an order, but rather recognizes power in the physical world, or some kind of manifestation of the power of the physical world as the idea of God.

No, at least not the smart ones.
Satanists are essentially anti-Christians, they accept our worldview, they just openly choose the other side.
Pagan is a ancient slang term for everything but Christians, it has more recently been narrowed to mean only the "earthier" religions.
Some people confuse the two due to some overlap in traditions and beliefs. Biblically, it doesn't matter whether a Christian considers you a satanist or a "pagan" or an atheist for that matter. We are commanded to show Christs love to all with the understanding that we all are equally sinners. If a Christian has been calling you names, it was not done in the name of Christ. Try to forgive them, Christians are sinners too.

It is a popular misconception among many Christians that pagans are devil worshippers. I believe it may stem from the early puritans spreading rumors that anyone that worships nature must be devils worshippers and therefore also practice witchcraft. I think I also read in "The Da Vinci Code" that the catholic church spread the "pagans are satanists" rumor to discredit anything the pagans might teach to its followers. They had to get everyone to join their religion so what better way than to make pagans look as bad as possible?

yes, some of them do, which is sad. they're told that anything that's not christian is evil, ie, comes from satan, meaning that its satanist and must be avoided at all costs, including learning about them.
although paganism and satanism are two different religions, NONE of which worship or have anything to do with the christian satan. pagans and satanists don't care about what christians believe in. lol. satanists worship themselves as gods because that's what's most important in their lives. pagans worship other gods, many times of varying pantheons. i know some who give homage to the egyptian gods, others to just a god or goddess, it really varies among pagans.
Ilene W: satanists don't do blood sacrifice, lol. that's a christian myth. satanists worship themselves. to a sanatanist life is sacred, and that means ALL life is sacred, so no killing in the same of satan (which is allegorical, btw) they also don't actively seek out evil, they just don't get their morality from god, all morality comes from inside the person, and most choose to follow a path that is different from that of "normal" people. which i repeat is not the "dark side" or "evil". many are smart, moral people.

Not all pagans worship mother earth (that is actually not the meaning of pagan). Pagan is anyone who does not worship the OT god. I am a pagan and I worship the serpent and Lucifer. And if Christians weren't bewitched by their Roman bible they too would know who christ is.

I think the answer is that most people are ignorant. They still view witches or pagans as they did in the dark ages when people were burnt at the stake! I looked into paganism before I got into spirituality and firmly believe the world would be a much better place if more people followed either.

I do not believe pagans are satanists. In fact there are so many diffrences, I don't even think they can be compared. It is my understanding that Pagans worship nature, I think they believe in more than one God or Goddess, and they are sort of earthy--wanting to be connected to the Earth. Satanists however, actively choose to follow evil. They are involved in blood sacrifice, and into personal gratification. I don't see pagans as evil, but I do see satanists as evil.

From what I know of Paganism, pagans worship nature. There is a goddess, and they do not believe in satan or hell.
People who worship Satan are called Satanists or Satanic Followers from what I've heard, but I may be wrong.

I believe that at one point in time Paganism was labelled under the propaganda term 'Satanism'. But why concern yourself with what ONE religion calls you. They call just about every other religion that they don't agree with something similar. But you shouldn't take the words of a Satanist like me very seriousely.
