and while I'm sometimes around it directly, most times I go down there after he smokes and the smoke isn't there but it smells and my chest kind of feels gummy. Am I going to get lung cancer? Again it's just smoke that's been left over, and he norminally smokes outside or in the garage when it's raining but I can't stand it. I've talked to him about it and he cares but I recognize he pays the bills and can do what he wants pretty much.

Elman411, if anyone needs a clue it's yourself pal. Do you work for Phillip Morris or something? Seriously, are you trying to shill something with that propaganda?

My father's one of the best living, AND he's a nurse. I have talked to him about this for close to 9 years now about him smoking in front of me in general and he told me the gummy feeling is triggered by my anxiety because i hate the smoke so much and that he has tried to quit but has a difficult time doing so. You are right though, he is going outside since, but I'm 25. I wanted my own place by now, but for many reasons that's not going to happen for at LEAST another year.

Touchy subject!! You're right you father is the king of his castle, however he has a responsibility to you and your health until you are of age to leave the home. Unfortunately if your dad isn't ready to quit smoking, he is probably is doing everything he can by not directly smoking in the home. Maybe discuss with him how uncomfortable it makes you when you go to the basement after he has smoked there, and how you would appreciate the effort if he just smoked in the garage or outside.

Second-hand smoke can be a contributing factor for lung cancer but probably not for awhile. Have you considered the possibility that you may be asthmatic? Smoke can be a trigger and if you only have it mildly, the "gummy" feeling may be related to that. Please encourage Dad to quit smoking, but you are right, you can't force him and it is very hard to quit.

Just because you breathe second hand smoke doesn't mean you are going to get lung cancer. If you aren't a smoker you might be extra sensitive to smoke - or maybe you a slightly asthmatic.

Don't go into the basement unless he hasn't smoked in it for hours. Still, it will be in the room. Maybe ask him to open the windows while he's down there or a fan? If you don't want it to have effects on you, don't go down there, even right after.

It doesn't matter if he pays the bills, there's no price on your life. Tell him that. Some people are so selfish.

it's either life or death, and death is the price for lung cancer, so if you get that, you're pretty much screwed
