I think I got the hard kind? Can you like eat it just straight out of the package in salads? Or do you have to bake it, cook it, what?

If you have been using Cottage cheese before, you shouln't have any problems with tofu. Tofu is a type of cottage cheese made from soy milk. Use it (i mean cook it) as you would do with cottage cheese.

Well coming from a japanese guy that just had some tonight?
On warm days I just like to eat the soft kind. Cut the block into small squares the size of stew meat and put soy sauce on it. I also like to sprinkle furikake (sesame seeds, dried seaweed and spices) you can get it at any asian market. You may garnish with thinly sliced green onion.

The next favorite is something called Mabu tofu. This is where you use the firmstuff you bought. Again you buy this at the asian market. Brown ground meat (beef, pork, chicken) and add the contents of the package to the small tofu chunks like described above. Also great with garnish of green onions. You can get hot or medium spice.

Tofu is a bland, tasteless food that needs flavoring. A good source of protein and a favorite of vegetarians. Try it in place of meats in recipes or in salads.

to get it the consistancy of the tofu in Chinese resturants you need to fry it, but that will be very messy, it splatters a lot, so bake it! I would put it in at a high heat, 450? for as long as it takes for some of the moisture to bake out of it
