well dont send anything that the Company Commander will be able to rip him apart for..they like to open mail, and if there is some good personal pictures, or nicknames they will eat your son up with them..
I was in the Coast Guard..and any letter is nice, just about what is going on..but dont make him feel like he is missing something, make it sound like things are boring there right now and he is better off where he is, the last thing he wants to hear is that he missed so and sos BBQ, and all the fun everyone is having..encourage the whole family to write not just Mom, but Dad, siblings, close friends and cousins

I've been through boot camp, and letters and pics are always enjoyed. Although, for the first two weeks or so, you are not allowed to have any mail. They are trying to teach recruits to get accustomed to being away from home. After that, they will be able to not only receive letters, but depending on their RDC (boot camp instructor), they may be able to march up to the NEX (Navy Exchange) and purchase calling cards to make short phone calls home.

When I was in boot camp, letters and pictures from home were great. That is about all they allow. My mom sent me a birthday cake and my my two company commanders each ate a piece in front of everyone and then threw the rest in the trash. I never told my mom that though since my recruiter had told her it would be allowed.

certain things like food and some personal pictures aren't a good idea. someone in my division also had a cake sent to them and my rdc's ate the entire cake and made us pt or workout un til they ate the whole thing they made it last about one and a half hours. pictures and cards the rdc will open and read them any thing unacceptable will be taken but just reading a normal letter is a great feeling every sunday.

Letters/pictures. I'm going to bootcamp as a Seaman Apprentice in 3 days and I know that your kid's going to be so busy he will barely even have time to write letters back.

If you send him something like cookies, jut make sure there is enough for him to share. They frown on food but will let him have it. Other then that, letters, and pictures.

send him a cuddly little teddy bear, his fellow recruits and the DI's will get a real kick out of that.

A pre-paid phone card. The Wal-mart kind are actually the best. They are easy to use from over seas and are re-chargeable. Tell him "Thank you and welcome aboard "from a grateful ex-squid.
