Single Soldiers live for free in the barracks, married soldiers receive housing on base. In the event of inadaquate housing, or if you choose not to live on base, then you will receive BAH (not BMA or BAA)--Basic Allowance for Housing. It varies by rank, marital status and location. With the constant upgrading in housing, most housing is extremely nice as is the barracks.

BAH is not a right, or extra pay, it is a substitution for housing. You do not lose money to live in housing. BAH is supposed to cover 80% of the rent and utilities combined, so therefore, you would probably lose money.

Granted, not all housing is the best, but the Army is spending multi millions every year to upgrade the housing at all of it's installations. If someone answers that has been gone from Army service for over 5 years, than they are telling history, not current information. Also, the other services may be different. Air Force and Navy housing is better for officers (especially pilots and ship commanders). Marines do not care for the housing for families (families do not even get medical coverage until the recruit finishes ALL training). The Army uses superior housing as a retention tool. If you leave in a nice place, you'll probably stay in the Army.

Yes, absolutely, On-Post Housing is free; complete with utilities. However, off-post housing is advantagous because you are paid a flat rate based on Rank, marital status and Zip Code. For Example I'm an O-3, married and live in E-Town, KY, the flat rate (aka Basic Allowance for Housing [BAH]) is $1,008 a month. My actual rent is $690 a month with an average utility bill of $160 a month. So I'm getting an additional $158 dollars in my pocket courtesy of Uncle Sam, which I put towards my cable, phone, and internet.

Note: Some posts have restrictions on what rank can live off post, or there are requirements to fill all on-post housing first prior to allowing someone to live off-post. Overseas you'd get an Overseas Housing Allowance (OHA) based on the cost of living of that particular country.

The link below will give you an idea how on-post housing looks on a particular post and can calculate off-post BAH or OHA.

I lived in Military base housing at Carswell AFB for 4 years and we never had to pay a cent for anything but.. if you live off base you will get what they call BAH it's extra money in your pay to help pay for you rent off base but if you ever lived around a military base the rent is very high so I recommend base housing plus it's like living in your own private community and you will feel safer with children.
One hint though... while living in base housing make sure your outside lights are turned off before 8:00 am lol and keep your yard neat.

I was living in Fort Hood. Military housing is free. There is something called BAA; this is money that you can use to rent an apartment or house outside the base. If you receive this money, you cannot live incase. Living outside the base is better because there is always some money extra. However, you must be married to be allows to live off post, unless you have the authorization of your commander. Most single new soldiers are not allowed to move off post, they have to life in the barracks.

hubby and i live on base but its privatized base housing. He gets BAH for the amount of rent. We have to pay almost 800.00 a month for housing. Its free but at the same time its not.

you can either be provied housing and not receive the extra pay, which if I remember right is called BMA...or you can reeive the xtra pay and go out and find a place to live..the amount of money depends where you live, and if you are married or not and your rank. some military services require you to make it to a certain rank before you can get paid extra to move on your own..but while I was in the USCG in Miami there was no housing available so, we got the pay regardless of rank

No, you are given a housing allowance (BAH) which is dependant on rank and area. To live in base housing, you forfeit that money. We lost $1,002 a month to live in a ghetto house on post, to have someone measure my grass and tell me the number of pets I can have. NO THANK YOU!

Yes but technacally no because if you live off post you get BAH basic allowence for housing which start at about $500 for the lowest ranks and get more depending on your rank and where you live but if you live on post you don't get it.

Technicall, no. It may as well be though. The cost is a pittance. Back when I was in, billet cost for a single guy was $10 a month.
