well, its a choice. but i do beleive that they are one of the most overutilized and overprescribed classes of drug out there. everybody feels a "little blue" once in awhile, and everyone thinks theyre depressed so they run to the doctor who says "uhh, ok whatever, take this"
but some people really do need to be on them

Benzodiazepines have their uses but only in a certain context. They will not help you recover from depression as SSRIs will.
SSRIs do have side effects but, they never last very long. benzodiazepines have a far worse side-effect! They are addictive. SSRIs are not. Cipramil has barely any side-effect and certainly not weight gain. Although the therapeutic dose is still 20 mgs, your doctor can prescribe 40 or even 60 mgs a day and you will not suffer side effects, certainbly not as bad as you would with other drugs.
The main point about anti-depressants is that you have to comply with your medications and, should you do so, while also helping yourself with activities such as depression support group where you can talk about your feelings, share your experience with others, walking regulaly, swimming, etc. You will feel a lot better emotionally while also seeing some of the acquired weight drop off.
Please be realistic about Benzodiazepine! SSRIs give you a chance to get over depression, Benzos as you call them ... Only add on a new problem for you ... The risk of addiction. You don;t need it!
Take care

I don't remember benzo's (are you talking about "bennies"?). Taking SSRI's means you are taking medicine that helps with your seritonin level.- Anti-depressents. They seem to help alot of people. Not all of them make you fat, nausious, dizzy, etc. They have no mind-altering effects at all. Alot do have side-effects that usually go away in a few weeks. I like Prozac best. I lost a few pounds, and I felt a mood difference within 2 weeks. The side effects weren't too bad. I was alittle "manic" at first, but nothing too bad.

Don't forget, everyone is DIFFERENT.

SSRI are an effective anti-deppressant regardless of the side affects, if they aren't working for you then another variety may be better for you.

SSRI's are NOT for psychoses, as the prior answerer seems to think. They are for lesser disorders. You need to talk to your psychiatrist and find one that does not have these side effects.

If you don't need it, the serotonin effect would result. You would essentially get very shaky, nauseous, potentially have a seizure, and could slip into a coma. It is really dangerous. Mainly you'd feel sick. People end up in hospital because they get the serotonin effect. Not good unless you need it.

Perhaps you don't need the medication anymore. (Effexor is really a clean drug with few side effects.) Or perhaps you need an antidepressant that works on different chemicals, like an MAO. I'm not a doctor, but I would tell yours what's going on.

SNRI's are your best bet. Less side effects, better results. They treat the physical symptoms of depression as well
