What you can do to help him is be a friend. Let him know he can talk to you and listen to him if he decides to tell you his feelings.
I don't think the ADHD is causing the problem as much as the grief over losing his father.14 is an age that is very hard to lose a parent. He may not feel normal for a whole year.
He needs to discuss this with his doctor. His doctor will tell him if he needs to visit with a therapist or if he needs medicine to help with sleep or with his bad feelings.
Since he's a guy, he may not have told his mother yet. She can help him figure out what to do, but if she doesn't know, here's what you do.
Wait until all three of you are in the same room and all discussing something together and turn to your friend and ask him in front of her, while she's listening if he is still having trouble sleeping at night. She will find out. He won't have to talk about it and you won't be in trouble for telling her behind his back. He might be irritated with you at the moment, but the important thing is his mom finds out so she can help him.

There is nothing to compare to valerian root for sleep disturbances, IMHO. I had trouble sleeping for years, and this stuff does the trick without side effects of any kind. The best I've found is the capsules made by Solgar. It's a very strong smelling stuff, and can have an aftertaste if you don't drink a lot of water. Give him 2-4 depending on how big he is an hour before bed.

ADHD can cause sleep problems. Grief may compound it. See your family physician for suggestions. Having an evening routine with an hour or so of non-stimulation before bed should help. Make sure he stays on the same schedule everyday.

There are two issues her; grief and ADHD. The two can certainly exacerbate each other. Perhaps he can be evaluated by a psychiatrist for the ADHD and sleeping problems. Also there are therapists who specialize in grief counseling. I hope your son can rest, sounds like he has been through a lot. Best wishes to you as well.

If he exercises, don't have him do it late because his heart will be racing, so he won't be able to sleep. Also don't have him eat late because that will also keep him up, ditto with caffeine. Try having the kid drink tea, that may calm his nerves.
If I were you, I'd have him see someone. Don't have him try sleeping pills.....from what I heard they can be addicting and the last thing it sounds like he needs is an addiction. Good luck and hope things work out for the best with him.

Skittles is this the same kid that you have been on and on about who has the drug problem? wake up, you should be on drugs and under the care of a shrink, the kid can be returned to his own folks and if they can not deal with their own spawn then the state can look after him. the last thing you need is a jacked up junky roaming around your house all night long. I will not answer you again because this is just too stupid and dumb. The Kid is on dope, enough that you want to do good, fine, turn him in for drug rehab, they are professional trained, and you will not be destroying your own family in a stupid attempt to save someone that you are not equipped or trained to deal with

Sorry, I know nothing about ADHD. Might something as simple as caffine be contributing to the problem (i.e., in soda, chocolate, coffee, etc)?
