Shaving is an option, but if you don't want to get rid of all their hair then brush them a lot. I used to be a dog groomer and there are a lot of tools out there that most people don't know about, or they just don't know the right brush to use. You can go to Petsmart and walk into the grooming department and ask them what kind of brush they think you should use depending on the breed. A slicker usually works pretty well on most hairy dogs, and a curry brush for shorter haired dogs. They also make tools that are designed to pull all the dead hair from the coat to diminish shedding throughout the season.

Invest in the Dyson "Animal" vacuum. They are expensive but it makes a world of difference. The pet hair seems to magnatize to the vacuum. The vacuum is very user friendly and is truely worth the money. I swore I would never pay that much for a vacuum but I am so glad I did. It has made a huge difference in the house.

Summer is the height of the shedding season. Get them a good haircut. They will be more comfortable in the heat and you will have less hair around the house.

Get a comb that collects hair from their undercoats and comb them daily. You will see a huge reduction in the amount of pet hair around your house.

There are supplements available that claim to reduce shedding. (One example: go to http://www.drsfostersmith.com/ and type "shed"). I have not used these myself but have heard that they can be effective. I believe that the idea is that a healthier coat throws off less extra hair, though I can't confirm that.

arm & hammer makes a sprinkle powder you sprinkle on carpet to help release the hair. It is sold at many stores and the dollar store has it pretty cheap. I use it and it helps also grooming. As far as furniture i put them down their own blanky to lay on. They love having their own space to lay on.
