Hey congratulations! I just saw a car yesterday, all done up like a newlyweds' with tin cans dangling and on the windows was written 'still married - 30 years!' isn't that a great idea?!
Anyway, as for a poem, there are so many choices, but I think a good poem for the ocassion would be a classic robert frost poem, like "the road not taken" because everyone has their own interpretation of it, and usually that's a variation of 'I made a good choice long ago'
Here's a link to the poem, and on this page, you can even hear Frost read it (which might help esp. if you're going to read it: http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/15717

One by one each year flew by, since you both said "I do"...
Forty years of memories, shared by the two of you.
From big events and holidays to simple daily pleasures,
Some tearful times along life's way,
some joys that can't be measured...
One by one each year now gone,
but still they're yours forever...
Each and every memory,
of forty years together!

You could use the lyrics of a song. Especially if they have one that is special to them.
