I have never been to NYC and am wandering if I should visit there first before spending New years Eve in Times Square.

I live in Times Square... I leave the area every year to avoid the mess that the NYPD orchestrates. Post 9/11 security ruins everything. 06' you could only access Times Sq via 59th street (the ball drops on 42nd st), and unless you waited in the freezing cold @ 12 noon the day before (w no bathroom breaks), you simply had no chance. NYPD oficers that night were extra rude. If you stay away from Midtown West then NYC is GREAT otherwise for NYears Eve. Assuming you like parties, alcohol, friends, music etc.

yes it is amazing but to have a good time you should have reservations at one of the restaurants in Times Square becuase if you don't you will have to wait for a long time to be really close enough. There are some good places that aren't that expensive just make sure you do your research. I went there for 5 solid years and had a blast every time

News Years Eve in Times Square is a total pain in the *** but it's one of those things you should do just so you can say you've done it. It's like Europe in that sense.

If you've never spent any time in a big city, visit first, to find out if you're OK with that environment.

If cities don't bother you, then do it: I haven't been there for New Year's yet, but I want to give it a shot.

It's cold and crowded, but the fireworks are wonderful. The atmosphere can be pretty fun too.

it's not the best time since it is crowded, cold, hard to find a bathroom, pickpockets, etc.
