even though both means I love you saying "te amo" is like the ultimate thing to say, is a deeper love, everyone says te quiero, but not everyone says te amo

yes.
quierer is to want
it is more friendly and works between family and friends too
I've had a five year old say te quiero primo, (I love you cousin) so yea it's a family thing

amar is to love but it also means a comitted relationship...
another translation of te amo would be I master myself unto you...
so it could mean... something very sexual indeed...
