It's true. People are self-centered. Obviously, tht person doesn't really have anything truly important to do after being at the grocery store, or they'd look for a shorter line. But they are in the typical-modern-American perpetual rush.
I am rarely in a rush. I often allow the person behind me to step ahead, specifically, anyone old, any pregnant woman, or any person only carrying a bottle of pop.
When I was pregnant, I'd be finishing the shopping feeling exausted, nauseous, swollen, light-headed and miserable. And as I was waddling my preggy self up to the check-out counter with my two-year old in tow, I actually had people with full carts race into the line ahead of me. Why? Because they were in a rush to go home and put away a carload of groceries? Or because they would never consider how another person felt?
So if cartain people get patiently into line behind me, I often smile and wave them ahead.
As for the rest of them, I find a big smile, sunny disposition and friendly comments about the weather really tick them off. And if the person ahead of me is rude to the cashier, I try to make a loud joke about why they were in such a rush before they're out of earshot. (My favourite is: "Wow. Grandma was really testy! She must be late for her bingo game!" or "They really need to come out with Mydol for men!")

THE SAME REASON AN IDIOT DRIVES 30 MILES AN HOUR BELOW THE SPEED LIMIT DURING RUSH HOUR ON THE FREEWAY TALKING ON THE CELL PHONE:.... BECAUSE THEY CAN.
