You can own a handgun if you are licensed, but there are many restrictions where you can carry. Research the web for weapons laws in NY - there are plenty.

I'm honestly not sure why some of these idiots post what they're saying. First off, Tasters are not legal in New York. You can't carry them. Second, blade length has nothing to due with legality of knife possession in NY. Knives in NY are oddly restricted, with the law being rather ambiguous. Automatic knives, knuckle knives, and gravity knives are illegal. With possibly a few other exceptions, all other knives are technically unrestricted--but if you get stopped by a police officer (or peace officer with power of arrest) it's up to them to decide the intent behind the knife, and therefore it's legality. In addition, if you carry a knife, make sure it's not concealed. Keep the pocket clip visible, so it's not a concealed weapon. Oddly, despite knives being legal (outside of New York City, don't carry a knife there, it's not a good idea), and CCP's are possible (though unlikely) to acquire, most non-lethal weapons are illegal.

Well the most powerful self defense weapon you can have is self awarness if you have to go out at night dont just go strolling down the street and never look anywhere but where your walking. Its funny but the next time you see someone doing so see how long you can tail them before they look directly at you. you would be surprised at how many people walk around blind to their surroundings and then have the nerve to wonder why they got robbed. Tell me what good is carrying a gun when by the time you realize your getting robbed theres already one to your head or back.
