They look at your HLA types...

These are molecules "advanced" that are present in one's DNA, that rearrange to make antibodies. There are three classes, HLA-A, B, and C.

There are many types within each class, and so they look for a match which has the closest similarity (along with blood type) to the individual who needs bone marrow.

They match the DNA that's produced in the bone marrow. But drawing bone marrow hurts like hell. A blood test works just as well.
