humm good question. i believe that the old covenant was abolished with Christ sacrifice and Resurrection. I also believe that are parts of the old covenant that should be kept just to keep us focused. Just as the Ten Commandments should still be followed, we should also tithe. The Sabbath if we were to follow it like the Jews do (no disrespect at all) then we could do nothing including teach, preach, or bring the word to unbelievers, so the Sabbath in ways is a stumbling block to our beliefs and truths. Pastors must push tithing for the same reasons. I have also come to notice that when you give God your money and control over your finances he blesses you 10 fold. so pray about it. don't just give it up because you don't have to sacrifice makes things all the sweeter.

Good question!
No, tithing does not fall under the old covenant. it was established WAY before covenant period with Abraham tithing to God.
Now as to why pastors push this so much but not the sabbath? As Christians, it should be something we should look forward to do, Jesus himself encouraged us to do so. Not to show who can give more or less, but as a form of gratitude from out hearts. (Its the only way we can give something "material" back to God).
Pastors now in days push it much for many reasons, mainly because now we are too caught up with bill, new toys, rent, food, and all the daily needs + our little luxuries that we don't see tithing as a responsibility and probably one of the most important... hence we give pocket change to God. A church is sustained solely on the tithe that it receives, and church maintenance is rather expensive even if it does fall under non profit organizations... so when the budget is in "red"... tithe sermon comes to remind people that all our needs are important, but lets not forget to be grate full in our hearts towards God ....
whew... that was long

The sabbath was done away with.. Why don't we do animal sacrafices, that is in the Old Testament too.. Why are we eating pork and shellfish??? We are not under the OT law.. The tithing is just stating that God gives us 10% extra money so that we can give it to the church, but in the New Testament we should really give more. Tithing is just a bare minimum and you aren't really giving anything personally, just giving back the extra that God gave you. If you really want to give 10%, then you need to give 20% as the first ten is what God gave to you..

According to Jeremiah 31 there is no difference between the old covenant and the new except for the medium on which it is written.
I suspect that pastors push tithing, despite no requirement stated in the "New Testament" books, because it pays their salaries, and because most of them know that God still blesses obedience.
They don't push the Sabbath, because they would have to answer difficult questions about the 7th day vs the 1st day, and that would lead to very serious questions about the nature of God's laws and covenants. Not to mention serious disruptions in their personal lives.

Jesus spoke often of money. He specifically mentioned tithing when he spoke of the poor woman giving her only money, and the rich man who, while he gave more than the woman, contributed only a small portion of his wealth.
"For where your money is, there your heart will be also."

Sabbath goes back to Jewish Times and Catholic. Its been known Protestants edit their books on purpose, to not upset thier believers.
