If I had to pick one issue facing America today - it would be to address our electoral system. The way we pick our leaders is completely backwards and rigged. The fact that over ninety percent of our Congressional leaders are re-elected is not equitable, and just because they have done a great job. There are many variables there which I couldn't even begin to get into. The voter registration system needs overhaul because it disenfranchises too many people. In my state, you have to think about the election enough to consciously sign up for it at least ninety days before the election. That's absurd! I mean - there are many states who do same-day registration and their participation numbers are way above my own state. Also, citizens are citizens and a vote is a vote, so get everyone who is a citizen a voting card, and make sure it is counted. No matter of race, religion, creed, orientation, criminal background, whatever. If you are a citizen of this country, you should have an inalienable right to choose your leaders.
By the way - I'm registered Democrat.

The most important issue facing Americans today is our credibility in the world community.
We tend to ignore the fact that over 20 million people in the rest of the world are refugees. We tend to ignore the fact that we are the number one agricultural and industrial nation in the world and that 20 million people worldwide are literally starving to death.
We ignore the fact that most of the world hunger in the world is caused by civil wars. There are civil wars in Columbia, Chad, the Sudan, the Congo, Namibia, Indonesia and a whole lot of other places, and as Americans, instead of working to eradicate the conditions for civil war, we are creating the impetus for more civil wars in the Middle East.
We, as Americans, need to establish better lifestyle choices, education resources and political skills to set an example to the rest of the world that we have credibility when it comes to avoiding war and encouraging other nations to feed and shelter themselves.

The war on terrorism. We all like to believe it is Iraq alone, but really it is about protecting freedom. Radical Islamist want to do away with systems and ideas based on freedom and the rights of all. The American people need not remain passive and begin to educate themselves on the reality of what is happening around us. To take the words of the media and politicians is simply not enough. Support and pray for our troops, but also keep your eyes open to the basic difference between right and wrong. So that said the MOST important issue really is EDUCATION.
