Most vets/cat experts recommend 8 weeks. Mine all came home before then.

My 6 year old cats were found on the side of the road at about 2 weeks and turned over to my vet. She showed me how to care for them and sent them home w/me about a week later. They were so tiny they weren't even playing yet!

My 16 year old cat was born in my mom's closet. She sent him home with me at 5 weeks. He was eating moistened food and using the litter box. The problem with bringing a single kitten home this early is that they develop an unnatural bond to their human parents. This cat thinks I gave birth to him or something, and he's really a one person cat!

When I was a kid, Mama Cat got outside with 4 1/2 week old kittens inside and got killed by a car. My mom helped them learn to eat. We kept one of the kittens, and she turned out fine. Lived to be like 19.

I would say if you can keep them for another couple weeks, they'll be more adjusted in their new homes, but they can certainly survive without mom now.

It's illegal to give away AKC puppies before they turn 6 weeks, they say 7 weeks is ok. I would probably wait until 8 weeks, and wait until they're eating dry/moist food and not nursing off of their mother so much. I always kept my kittens a long time, but not by choice. I would let mine go at 8 weeks if anyone wanted them, but not before then.

8 weeks is better.. ideally they should have shots at least 2 days before leaving their current home..
keep in mind only about 20%-40% of "free to good home" kittens actually find good homes - its better to give them to an SPCA and have them screen potential adopters. People who come to your home will appear good, but they may take the kittens to sell to research labs or worse... they are professionals who do this, they know how to fool you, and most people who give kittens away dont really ask info as to who is getting them...
people who take free kittens - do they have $ to pay for medical needs? why are they not adopting a kitten from the SPCA?? if they were "GOOD" owners they would have gone to the SPCA first... not you

Wow, I've never heard of AKC puppies being illegal to be sold before 6 weeks. I wonder who regulates that? hmmmm...I bought my Mini-Schnauzer at 5 weeks old.

As for the poster's question.

If the moma cat is starting the weaning process, or they're fully weaned, 6 weeks is fine. It's a little younger than *I* would like, but it is fine.

About 8 weeks is what I like to see, but again, if weaning has occured or began, 6 weeks is good.

i dont think 6weeks is to early it all depends on the kittens thenselves really what you should be asking yourself is are they feeding themselves? are they drinking water/milk and not from the mother? are they litter trained? if the answer is yes then there ready i had my cats when they were just 5weeks old and when the female had kittens off her own they werent ready to leave untill they were 8weeks old so you see it reallt does depend on the kitten themselves :-)

Yes defo.

In fact I would leave them for 9 or 10, kittens need this vital socilization time with other cats.
