YES!!! Have you gotten a heartworm test yet? If you havent been giving any since you got the dog theres a definite possibility that your dog already has them. Definitely go into your vet and get a test, if its negative, id recommend either getting revolution (takes care of both heartworms and fleas) or heartgard (just heartworms) the revolution is a small amount of liquid that is put in between the shoulder blades directly on the skin, its absorbed into the body and works from the inside out, youll need to apply it once a month. The heartgard is a chewable you give to your dog once a month also and should take care of the heartworms. If your dog already has heartworms, youll have to pay for heartworm treatment, which is relatively expensive, youll have to leave your dog at the clinic for a couple weeks while it is given regular immiticide shots to kill the heartworms, hopefully if your dog has them, it hasnt been too long. Most likely, since you lived in california, there isnt a bad mosquito problem them, why your vet didnt put you on some form of heartworm medication is beyond me since every single time someone comes into the clinic thats the first thing i ask " are you on any heartworm medication", honestly id get in asap and get that taken care of, cause i cant stress enough how important it is. Get back to me and let me know what you decide to do and how it goes. Good luck and hope this helps.

Hi, YES, any dog can get heartworms. Heartworms are caused by mosquito bites. I suggest taking Doxie to the vet, have the vet do a heartworm test, and if the results are good, start your Doxie on heartworm preventative ASAP. I give my Sassy (Boston Terrier) Heartgard Plus every month.
Hope I was of some help.
Good Luck!
Hope Doxie does NOT have heartworms. (My Yorkie does and I freak out everytime he coughs, wondering if it will be his last. We caught his too late and wasn't able to treat him without the risk of the treatment killing him. He seems healthy and I would not have known he had them if I didn't have the vet test him.)
Also, the testing for heartworms is not really expensive.
I pay only $25.00 for a 6 month supply of Heartgard Plus, you have to buy this from the vets office or on the internet (1800petmeds.com) or call 1-800-PetMeds they have the Heartgard for a few dollars cheaper than the vets office (atleast here it is).
You have to get Doxie tested for heartworms BEFORE you start her on a preventative. If you do NOT get Doxie tested, and Doxie does have heartworms, and you start your doggie on heartworm preventative, it COULD KILL your dog!
Get her tested, if everything is negative, start the preventative.

From everything I have heard, any dog can get heart worms. The are caused by infected mosquitoes. Take him to the vet to be checked for heart worms and if he does not have them, get the prevention medication from the vet.
You should have your dog checked first by the vet, because if he does have them, the prevention medicine can cause a whole load of other problems and possible death.

Heart worms are not picky, they will infect ANY breed.
They are caused by mosquitoes.
You will need to have your vet take a blood sample and they will be able to tell you if your baby is OK.
It only takes a couple of minutes.
Your vet will recommend a brand to use, I use Interceptor. But they make one that is like a little chewy treat, it is called Heartguard Plus. The vet will carry several different brands.
You give one pill/chewy per month by mouth, on the same day (or within one or two days).

You should definitely get your pup on heartworm med since it can be fatal if your dog gets it. It's not very expensive and he/she would only have to take it once a month. Just go to your vet to get a perscription for it, also there is a website you can order it from (but you have to have a perscription first) but I don't know what it is, the commercial usually comes on during The Price is Right!

ALL dogs are succeptible to heartworm. Definitely put your dog on a preventive. It's so much cheaper than the cure. As to where to get it, the vets office or 1800Petmeds.

You should give her heartwork medicine because yes they can get them, all dogs can. They get them from being bitten by some mosquitoes. It can kill them, so maybe you should get her to the vet for a test... and your vet should have heartworm medicine.

any dog can get heartworms but some states need it more than others. Only your vet can decide that.

You need to get it from the vet. First your vet will check to make sure he does not have heartworms.
