I just got my mouthguard today and will be wearing it for the first time tonight. Had to, after the filling came out of a molar on one side and then I cracked the molar on the OTHER side! The dentist strongly recommended that I get a mouthguard since he felt I was wearing down my teeth through grinding. Considering that each molar cost $300 to fix, not to mention the time and discomfort involved---getting a custom made mouthguard is a worthwhile investment. Especially since he said he would make me a new one if this one wasn't comfortable to wear or was worn down from my grinding!

about 80-90% of people grind their teeth. It's stress related. Mouthguards that you buy over the counter and "form" to your teeth actually hurt you. The idea in a mouthguard is to help you relax your jaw. If a mouthguard is soft enough to form to your teeth, it will be flexible when you wear it, so all it will do is work your jaw even more. You need something hard to wear so that your jaw relaxes and you create some space between your upper and lower jaw. Ask your dentist about one. Grinding is non-reversible on most people, but it can keep you from making the condition worse to the point that you might need surgery or start getting migraines from it.

There are a lot of people who either grind or clench their teeth at night, about 70% of the population! It can be due to stress or even medications. Nightguards help, but the best ones are the ones you have to have made by your dentist because they are custom made for your teeth and fit better. The ones you can buy for $10 at the drugstore are bulky and you probably wont be comfortable with it in your mouth, let alone sleep with it! They do work though and in the long run it is much cheaper to pay for a custom made nightguard than to need crowns on worn down teeth or pain killers for the headaches!! Let alone the damage to muscles and joints.

yes I do. Dentist told me that people bite down with about 1500 pounds of force. Amazing. Anyway.. I've tried a mouthguard and I cannot sleep with that thing in my mouth. Waste of money in my case.

I had this problem and they gave me one of the guards from the dentist - I hated it it was soooo big and it hurt. So I went to the local store and got one that is plastic that you heat in warm water the then it forms to you teeth. This was much more comfortable but I could not get use to it. What I mangaged to do is that I figured it was due to stree so now I walk, I have started joggin but the best was taking up tennis - I take my aggression out on the tennis ball and since I started doing that I have not had a sore jaw and it has been over a year.

yes I do, and I have used to those damn mouthguards. they do not work. I would gag on the damn things. I used to have to take Valium to relax me because I would get muscle spasms in my jaw. People had fun with that one. lol. My diet consist of ramen noodles and mickey D's milkshakes. The mouthguards suck.

Yes, I do I have tried the mouth guards and they definitely help. Just go to the sporting goods aisle in Target or wherever and just pick up a cheap mouth guard or bit that they use for football and stuff. The "Night Guards" cost a lot more and work just the same.
