ACT is a low dosage fluoride rinse, it helps to remineralize tooth structure, which is very helpful if you have roots exposed, cavity prone, or have demineralization (from ortho). Listerine kills bacteria, but it also has a high alcohol content (22%!) so it ends up drying your tissue, which will cause bad breath! There are newer rinses out that kill bacteria without the alcohol, Crest Pro Health rinse and Breath Rx rinse. Both of these are good at killing bacteria that cause plaque and bad breath.
It comes down to what you need, but you can use one rinse in the morning and the other at night if you need fluoride and bacteria control!

I am in agreement with Jennifer B.
ACT is a fluoride rinse, and this is the one I usually recommend to my patients. Especially if they are pop drinkers. If you're into sweets, make sure to rinse daily with a fluoride rinse.
Listerine is an anti-bacterial mouthwash with a high alcohol content. It does dry the tissue, and it can irritate if over-used.
Crest Pro Health is a relatively new rinse on the market, and it is produced without alchool.
Of the three, I think ACT is the all-around best...

RE:
Does mouthwash really do anything for you?
Like ACT or Listerine? What benefits, if any do they provide? And if it is beneficial, which is the best one?

Don't listen to Matt. He is way off base. A small amount is fine. To ease your fears, you can drink milk to help the fluoride ions bind to the calcium. That's what is used in offices to help if a moderate amount was swallowed. Matt, hygienists don't get royalties from fluroide. In fact, it prevents people from getting rampant caries and saves people like YOU and patients LOTS of money from expensive procedures by prevention. Hmmm, don't you think that if we were out to make lots of extra money, that we would let peoples teeth rot so we could charge them lots? No. Get your facts straight and don't talk about things you know little to nothing about or heard from someone in passing. ANYTHING beyond moderation can be dangerous and it's our job to assess if the patient is getting fluoride in moderation from oral care products to community fluoridation. Think about all the things you digest and breathe everyday. This is not much worse than any of them. P.S Baking powder is an abrasive that wears away enamel surface and only helps with staining. Again, don't preach on something you know nothing about. It makes you look silly. I'm sure you are typing in your little response, sadly, I will not be here to read it because I have better things to do than argue with ingnorant trolls. I'm sure it was equally silly and may it bring someone else entertainment. Good night!

Actually, the commercial mouth washes do more harm then good. They dry the mouth, creating a breeding ground for germs, and stronger bad breath. You are best to try Therabreath. This is a whole different kind of mouthwash. They have a web site if you're interested.

Personally, I think all it does is make your breath stink. I have never had any benefits from using mouthwash.
