There's a guy I was best friends with years ago. We grew apart as we grew older, but I would like to get back in touch with him. He moved, but I have his new address, phone number and email address. The problem is, I can't use any of them ethically because I got them from work where he's a customer. But I don't work where I would see him (can't tell you where I work). Anyway, I wrote a short letter to him just to say hi and see how he's been. I sent it to his old address, hoping the post office would forward it, but they didn't and it came back to me. Should I mail it to his new address anyway?

We didn't fall out of touch because of negative reasons, we just went different ways. We don't have any mutual friends, unfortunately. So, what should I tell him about how I got his address?

Why did you grow apart? If it was negative, then don't contact him with illegally collected info. If you just moved on and stopped talking to him because you went to a different school/job/state etc. and became less and less involved, then maaaaaybe, but only because he would react positively from hearing from you again. Chances are that if you have at least some of his info, you can find a reasonable way to say, "Hey, I looked your address up through the yellow pages...", or "I was talking to John, remember him?, and he gave me your address".

Ethically, you shouldn't send it to his new address. But if you can find another source for his address, GO FOR IT. This shouldn't be too difficult seeing that you already half way there. I suggest you "google" him and to look him up on anywho.com or a similar site. I am sure he will want to hear from you , regardless what you decide to do.

why don't you try to look it up on a search engine? If ithe info is available that way then you can just say you googled him. Is this an ethical issue, or is it that you don't want him to think you're a stalker?

Sure. If you were good friends, go for it. It's always to see an old friend. Brings back fond memories.

Sure. What have you got to lose? If he's not interested, he won't respond, or he'll tell you he's otherwise occupied.
