I am not making any accusations. This hypothetical question assumes that guilt is know.
The accuracy of our judicial system is another question for another day.

Regarding those who suggest making them serve, I like the sentiment. However, I don’t want a known fraud on my boat.

I think it depends on the lie.
If some kid goes out and buys a trident and tells girls in the bar that he's a navy seal, should that hold the same penalty as someone who said they were a great hero in Vietnam but was actually escorted around by armed guards?
How about someone who was not in the military at all but claims they were?
I say depending the extent of the lie, make it about the same as impersonating a police officer. But not quite as severe. Actually impersonating a police officer is a pretty serious crime considering that they are the only ones who have to power to interfere with your rights.

The government doesn't need to step in here if that's what you are implying. If you know that someone is lying about military service, call them out. They are doing it for attention and respect. Deny them that. Call them out and shame them in public. Run an ad in your local paper. Point and laugh at them as they go down the street. Take away whatever honor they tried to steal for themselves.

They should pass a law that makes you have to go into the Military and get some self respect.
