Someone I knew was taking care of my cat while I moved because my new apartment wouldn't allow pets. The next month my car broke down so I couldn't drive up to get him so they said they would bring him to me. They called later and said that their daughter took him to a friends house and her friend "lost" him. How do you lose a 10 year old neutered and declawed cat?
(It's too late for me to even try and look for him)
Yes, I trusted this person, but obviously not even more.

this person lives far away and I had absolutely no way to go get him

Thats a good idea! I also thought about going up there and putting lost pet signs up. That way if they gave him to a friend the people that had him would know I was looking for him.

It appears that weeks and months went by before any arrangements were made to get the cat. My first impression is that your friends' daughter (apparently a young girl) fell in love with the cat during that time and perhaps they did too. Because your cat is older, neutered, and de-clawed, they probably thought he was the perfect house pet for the daughter (they also didn't have to spend any money on neutering and de-clawing). She probably put up a trantrum when she realized the cat was going back to you, and this white lie made her a happy, spoiled little girl.

If you are truly serious about finding out if he is lost or not, make an UNANNOUNCED trip to them. If they are, in fact, keeping the cat, it should be easy to find out once you get into their house. If they start making excuses about not letting you in, or if you get in and see a litterbox, cat food dishes, signs that the cat is there, confront them to get your cat back.

One thing I don't understand is that you said your apartment wouldn't allow cats. So how were you going to drive up there to get him if the apartment didn't allow cats?

Your friend was highly irresponsible in letting his daughter take the cat anywhere- and that's giving the benefit of the doubt. I wish you luck with the lost pet signs, but I wouldn't expect to see him again. And yes, you are right to not trust this person.

I would make a surprise visit to see them to see if they are really still keeping him on you. Sounds like their daughter got attached and instead of admitting it they made up a story so they could keep him. If they don't willingly let you in call your local police and see if they can get a warrant.
