i guest got a kitten that is very small, she's just been weened i think? but i was laying on the couch yesterday watching tv and she jumped on me and started, i guess trying to find a nipple on my shirt? she licks and sucks at my shirt, any part of it, i throw her down, she jumps back up and starts doing it again. what is this behavior and how do i make her stop it?

Nursing instincts. My daughter got a Siamese kitten at 5 weeks old. It sucked her ear. Was the cutest thing I ever saw. Little ears laid back just like when sucking mother's milk. I would let it suck mine too. Demented I know but what can I say. I love cats.

She was most likely given away too early and hadn't been fully weened. Do you happen to know how old she is? Kittens are supposed to be at least 8 weeks old before they can be taken from the mother cat. I'm not exactly sure how to get her to stop doing that. Try putting down a bowl of milk and some wet cat food somewhere and see if she will drink the milk and eat the food. If she isn't able to eat the food then she is definitely too young and you will probably need to take her to the vet and see what they recommend. She may need to be bottle-fed for awhile before she can eat cat food. I hope this helps.

Your kitten is dry nursing. Try cuddling it and having an alternative ready such as a blanket or old shirt if necessary. Remain affectionate unless the kitten bites in which case you should stop being affectionatefor a while when it will realise that biting you is not good.
If it continues trying to feed from your nipple.

Your kitten was taken from it's mother too early, and is looking for it's source of comfort...mother's nipple. I would substitute something like a baby bottle for that. Use warm milk, and keep her close to your chest so your kitten can hear your heart.
If you can tolerate the licking and sucking, just let her do that...your kitten will tire of it and give up.

That's probably it right there. Your kitten sounds like she was just taken from her mother and may not even be all the way weaned yet.
It will be hard on the baby, but in a way it will be good too: As young as she is, it will be easier for you to train her as you want her to be because she will view you as the 'momma'.
Good luck!

She was taken away from the mother too soon. Ask your vet about a baby bottle with a small nipple on it. Allow the kitten to suckle that for a while.

Your little kitten obviously got taken away from her mommy to soon. Let her continue to do this but if it grosses you out to much, find somthing else like a bottle or a kitten toy. She just feels comforted when she does this. She will grow out of it. Have fun with your new kitten and good luck! :)

You are correct- she's trying to nurse. Give her a clean pinky finger instead if this makes you uncomfortable. Your kitty was not emotionally ready to leave Mama. Don't correct her- it's normal & she'll outgrow it. You can also distract her when she does this w/ a favorite toy- get creative. DO NOT give your kitten cows milk!
