I think racoons or some other animal hurt the older cat. Younger cats sometimes just disappear and going to that neighbor is probably a coincidence. Our 5 year old cat disappears for days at a time. Sometimes, he has scratches but usually is fine now that he has experience outdoors.

If you let a cat outside, it is going to wander. If they are going to the neighbor's house when they reappear, the chances are that the neighbor has made friends with them, which is a good thing since you don't have to worry about the neighbor hurting the cat; and the neighbor has probably fed them at some point, as well.

From the evidence provided, I have to assume that there is something beyond your neighbor's yard that your cats are interested in. It could almost be anything. Perhaps a field where the prey are slow or a nice old lady that likes to feed "strays".

It sounds like an alien abduction. Your 21-year-old cat was abducted and was returned as a 1-year-old cat a year later. The aliens fixed his leg and gave him a sex change operation, which is why he is now a she. This same thing happens on the X-FILES all the time.

I think you have a typical cat who likes to disappear at night. Don't know about the broken leg...That's any ones guess. But mine would be, If the neighbors had anything to do with it, the cat wouldn't be hanging out there.

cats are strange creatures- there must be a path that goes thru your neighbors yard that only they know about and it leads somewhere that the first cat got hurt at- and the 2nd cat got trapped at. if they come up missing again- i would strat looking that a ways.

Stop letting your cat roam when it could be killed be a motor vehicle, coyote, neighborhood dogs, a person, or just find an owner who will feed it things it likes better than what you offer.
And out of curiosity.. . .
Did you euthanize your 21yr old cat??? Because age is not a disease, and bones can usually be fixed.
