I think that Baptism has been blown way out of what was intended by the Baptists. (I have been a Baptist most of my life) There is really very little scripture to support baptism as it is practiced today. Most verses in the Bible about Baptism are negatives, such as Paul saying, "I thank God that I baptized none of you so that no man could say you were baptized in my name." The only real verse to support what is called believers Baptism in in Acts when the Ethiopian Eunuch said what hinders me from being baptized and Phillip said, "If you believe with all your heart you may."

Well, as you seen in a lot of the other answers, there are Biblical verses to support baptism but what is all boils down to is this....an outward symbolic expression of something that's already taken place inside.
You accept and love Jesus? Baptism is symbolic of Jesus being buried in death and resurected. It's a symbol of the old self dying and a new person being born.
I don't believe it's necessary for salvation, but if you believe and want to follow Christ why wouldn't you be baptised?

The very first time in the Bible someone asked "what must we do to be saved" was at Pentecost and Peter told them to repent, be baptized for the forgivness of sins, and receive the Holy Spirit. That is in the second chapter of Acts,, but throughout the Bible the word tells us we are saved by faith. Whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life.

Romans 10:8-13 supports this rather well. From the NIV:
8.But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame."* For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile -the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."**

*Isaiah 28:16
**Joel 2:32

Read the whole of Romans 10 to see this in it's full context. Hope this helped!

We're saved through faith in Jesus Christ. Baptism does not save us. We're not saved by any works. Being
baptized was the example Jesus gave us as christians to follow. BTW, "grandma susie", I like your answer too.
Also want you to know I'm a "granny" too, age 71. I like

John 3:16-22
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
only Gen 22:2

17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

18
He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

22 After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.
