My dog makes hacking noises when he's excited too, especially when it's time for him to be fed. The vet said it's just allergies, and nothing to worry about. Most likely, your dog has something similar, especially if he's been doing it his whole life. But if if worries you, or if it just started all of a sudden, you should talk to your vet.

It depends on what the cause is before I can say rather it is bad or not. My dog (a Yorkie) is 7 years old and he does that everytime he gets excited and sometimes when he isn't. I brought him to the vet and found out he has heartworms. Unfortunately, they were already so bad, that if I started him on the very costly treatment which would have required him to stay in the "hospital" for a few days, the treatment itself could have killed him right then. That was about 3 years ago. He is still with me and he still "hacks" alot. I would suggest taking him to the vet. It could be something as small as asthma or it could be as serious as heartworms. If you really love your dog and can afford it, I would bring him to the vet. It would be well worth the money to know instead of just wondering. I hope I helped you. Good Luck!

It could be a collapsing trachea, heartworms, brachycephalic syndrome, kennel cough, a parasitic infection, or hypersalivation with dysphagia.
In other words, nobody on this site including myself (a veterinarian) can diagnose your dog with asthma without a thorough exam and diagnostic tests. If you really want answers, go to your veterinarian. It may be nothing, it may be a sign of something very serious.

I have a Yorkie and he does this quite often when he gets really excited. The first time he did it, we went right to the vet. He checked him out, and everything was fine. He said that small breeds often do this, and there was nothing to worry about unless it begins happening when he is resting, or has not just been active or excited.

If you have a small dog they sometimes have trachea problems. I had a small Yorkie that had this problem. When they get excited the trachea tightens up and they have trouble breathing. Talk with your vet they can check out the problem and have a better diagnosis for dealing with the issue.

Your dog may have something stuck in his throat, asthma, or heart worms all serious problems. Possibly other conditions are also involved. You should have him checked by a Vet. [I'm a 62 yr old grandma] Angell C.

Chances are your dog has what's referred to as a collapsing trachea. Small dogs are especially notorious for this. The wind pipe kind of flattens out temporarily. Coughing opens it back up. It's very common & it's not a big deal. I would only walk my dog with a harness, though & avoid pressure on his neck.

Well it could have to do with thier breed. I have a cocker spaniel labraodor mix and she looks like a lab puppy but her cheeks hang down so sometimes when she gets excited she will breathe in and out breathing her cheeks in really quickly and blowing them out and this makes her cough.
