Thanks for your reply...
I tried opening in safe mode,,,ha ha, not the way you say....is a lap top and there was an incy little bit down on the bottom left hand screen.

We have pulled the plug.
We have managed via arrows to restart
I have started in safe mode
I have restarted on 'last mode that was working'
I have done a desk top restore back to Friday
we still have screen freeze.

Yes! But first of all...do you need any files on PC (eg: fotos, music, movies) ...if not follow instructions at part A. Otherwise go to part B.

Part A:
Follow the instructions below exactly, be patient and I guarantee it will work.
Create Win98 boot if U dont have one. Search web or use link for smartdrv.exe then get it going dude.

INFO: Windows XP Clean Installation from Dos
What You Need:
* Windows XP CD
* Windows 98 Or Millennium Start-up Disk.
* Smartdrv.exe Which Can Be Downloaded HERE http://gktronics.topcities.com/smartdrv.... If Needed.

Copy smartdrv.exe To Your Start-up Disk.

Boot With Start-up Disk And Format Your Hard Disk.

Type smartdrv.exe And Enter at The A:\> prompt.
You Must Load Smartdrv.exe or You Will Be Setting Up
For the Next 3 Days!

Type e: And Enter, assuming Your CD Drive Letter Is "E".

Now Type cd i386 And Enter, Then winnt And Enter.
Follow The Installation Instructions. It Will Look As
Though Your Computer Has Hanged, But Let It Run!

In Some Cases It Will Say It Can't Read Certain Files,
That's Ok Because Dos Can't Read The New File Types.
Hit esc Till Finished. The Files Can Be Added Later.

It Might, At Some Point Say It Can’t Find Certain Files.
That’s Because Dos Put The Installation Files In A Temp
Directory In The Beginning. Hit esc Till Done.

After XP Has Started, Click "Start" Then "Run".
Be Sure Your Windows XP CD Is Still In The Drive.
Type cmd And Enter. Now Type cd\windows\system32 And Enter.
Finally Type sfc /scanall.
The Files That Couldn't Be Copied Will Now Be Installed.

And..guess what: XP is right there in front of you - enjoy!

Part B:

Locate your C: drive in Windows Explorer - right-click on it and select 'Properties'. Hit the 'Tools' tab at the top and select 'Check Now' under the error checking (1st section). Check both tick boxes and ok it - and agree (Yes) to anything which appears.
SHUTDOWN your PC.
RESTART and be patient...it might take some time - like an hour or more.
Tip - do this at bedtime but make sure your system is not set to turn off after a certain length of time, otherwise job will not complete in your nocturnal abscence.
If you wish to do this while awake, get the coffee going, but you will see a marked difference in the boot-up speed and response when complete.
Oh, I almost forgot....it will work fine then.

Enjoy your new system.

Do you mean the part where it says its loading Win XP? or once it actually gets to the desktop? First of all, start the computer in safe mode. Just after you turn it on, keep hitting F8, will bring you to a menu, and just choose safe mode. should load that way. From there you can hit Start button, choose "Run...", and just type in msconfig then hit OK. should be able to stop certain things from starting up that way, most likely something recently added is causing a freeze up. but more info would be good too. just try it, couldnt hurt.

OK. Try it another way. just trying to help you find out if it was something you installed.recently. go back into safe mode. (may be different on laptop, but should still be f8 for xp regardless. go to start, click "run..." type in MSCONFIG and hit ok. on the general tab, there are 3 radio buttons. choose diagnostic startup, then hit apply, then ok, and restart. see what it gives ya
